The School of Art and Design at Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT) aims to build an interdisciplinary academic system by integrating its strengths in mechanical and electrical engineering, information technology, materials science, and life sciences. The school emphasizes innovation in product functionality, modern information technology, user experience and interaction, and brand management. Its goal is to develop into a comprehensive and distinctive applied discipline with a strong interdisciplinary background, aligning with the Ministry of Education’s objectives for cultivating talents in the “New Liberal Arts.” It is committed to building a practice-oriented innovation platform that combines art with science and engineering—an approach known as “Art-Engineering Integration.”
The Department of Product Design originated from the Department of Industrial Design, which was established in 2005 with a focus on engineering. It began admitting students through art-focused admissions in 2009. In 2021, it was recognized as a “First-Class Discipline” in Beijing. The department currently offers two academic tracks: Product Design and Exhibition & Display Design.
The Digital Media Art program was launched in 2015 in response to the rapid development of the digital creative industry. It now features two specialized directions: Digital Imaging Design and Interactive Entertainment Design.
A hallmark of BUCT’s design disciplines is the “Art-Engineering Integration.” By combining design education with disciplines such as chemical engineering, materials science, and life sciences, the program embodies the philosophy of “science empowering art, and art advancing science.” The development of design disciplines is closely linked to scientific and technological progress. Leveraging BUCT’s strengths in mechanical engineering, materials, and chemical research, the school offers a range of distinctive, technology-oriented design courses. This interdisciplinary approach not only supports the construction of design programs but also addresses the growing demand for talents in related industries, significantly enhancing graduate employment prospects.
