Beijing University of Chemical Technology Hosts Cross-Strait Forum on Traditional Culture and Creative Design

To deepen cross-strait exchanges and cooperation in the field of creative design rooted in Chinese traditional culture and to explore effective pathways and successful models for the innovative transformation and development of China's excellent traditional culture, the "Integration and Innovation: Cross-Strait Traditional Culture and Creative Design Forum," hosted by Beijing University of Chemical Technology (BUCT), was held from December 7th to 9th at the conference center on the Chaoyang Campus. More than 30 experts and scholars from prestigious universities and research institutions across both sides of the Taiwan Strait, including Tsinghua University, Asia University, Taipei University of Technology, Beijing Institute of Technology, and Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology, participated in the forum. Wang Feng, a member of the Party Standing Committee and Vice President of BUCT, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. The forum was moderated by Li Xuemei, Secretary of the Party General Branch of the Department of Art and Design.

Speech by Wang Feng

In his speech, Wang Feng emphasized that cultural inheritance and innovation have become a critical mission for education in the era of globalization. He stated that BUCT remains committed to the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education and advancing the deep integration of culture and technology. Highlighting that Chinese traditional culture is a shared spiritual treasure of the two sides of the Strait, he noted that creative design can breathe new life into these traditions. Wang Feng expressed his hope that the forum would serve as a platform for exchanges in the field of cultural and creative design, facilitating in-depth discussions and collaborations to revitalize Chinese traditional culture in the new era, thereby contributing to cross-strait cultural integration and innovation.

Speech by Zhuang Yibing

Zhuang Yibing, Director of the Department of Art and Design at BUCT, delivered a speech on behalf of the host. He expressed his honor in welcoming experts, faculty, and students from cross-strait universities and cultural institutions to BUCT to jointly explore new ideas and models for traditional cultural creative design. Zhuang emphasized that Chinese traditional culture is the foundation of cultural development on both sides of the Strait, and that its innovative transformation and development require joint efforts and mutual learning. He expressed his hope that the exchanges and cooperation enabled by the forum would spark more creative ideas and that the event would become a bridge for deep collaboration in cultural and creative design, injecting new vitality into the inheritance and innovation of Chinese traditional culture.

Keynote Reports by Forum Guests

The forum centered on promoting the development of Chinese traditional culture. Wu Shizhong from Tsinghua University presented a talk titled "Culture of Creativity and Creativity of Culture," exploring the application value of narrative design methods in contemporary cultural creativity. Lin Xin-Hong from Asia University shared insights on "Cross-Strait Cultural Design Integration and Co-Creation," presenting practical cases and experiences in cross-strait cultural exchange and integration. Ding Zhaozhen from Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology discussed "The Cultivation of International Young Design Talent in a Culture-Driven Context," introducing "design marathons" as a novel model for talent development driven by cultural integration. Xiao Guohong from the Kaohsiung Museum of Science and Technology spoke on "Innovative Applications of Traditional Lock Culture in Museums," sharing research on traditional Chinese locks and their contemporary applications. Shen Huaping from Beijing Institute of Technology explored "Heritage Transmission and Regenerative Design Methods," focusing on the application of digital intelligence technologies in the preservation, transmission, and regenerative design of cultural heritage. Gao Jihui from Asia Eastern University of Science and Technology presented "Systemic Thinking in Cultural Creative Industries," addressing the integration of systemic and contemporary creative thinking. Zhuang Yibing from BUCT delivered a report on "The Design of Chairs in Ming-Style Furniture," discussing how traditional Chinese furniture culture inspires modern design. These insightful presentations provided fresh perspectives on inheriting and innovating traditional culture in modern society.

Forum Discussions

During the forum, participants engaged in in-depth discussions on theoretical and practical issues in traditional cultural creative design. They unanimously agreed that the field offers abundant resources and immense potential for cross-strait collaboration. Strengthening exchanges and cooperation to jointly promote the innovative transformation and development of Chinese traditional culture was seen as both a mission of the times and a shared aspiration among professionals on both sides of the Strait.
