BUCT Undergraduate Graduation Project Wins Gold at the 2026 MUSE Design Awards

  Recently, Green Chemical Industry Science Education Exhibition Space, a graduation project by Xu Ruiyao, an undergraduate student of the Class of 2022, under the supervision of Feng Zuguang from the Department of Art and Design, was named a Gold Winner at the 2026 MUSE Design Awards. Drawing on BUCT's disciplinary strengths in chemical engineering, the project integrates art and design with research into the green chemical industry, representing an innovative design initiative dedicated to science communication in this field.

The MUSE Design Awards are an internationally influential competition in the creative design sector. Open to designers and creative agencies worldwide, the awards span multiple fields, including architecture, interior design, product design, and landscape design. They aim to identify and honor outstanding work distinguished by innovative thinking, professional excellence, and social value. This achievement marks the first time that a BUCT undergraduate project has received a Gold Award at this level.

Centered on the theme “A Sea of Black Gold, Toward a Better Future,” the award-winning project focuses on the industrial innovation practices of Inner Mongolia Huanghe Energy Technology Group. It incorporates urban development and industrial transformation into the exhibition design, highlighting the transition of the conventional energy and chemical industries toward greener and more intelligent development. Beginning with the selection of the graduation-project topic, Feng Zuguang and Xu Ruiyao made two field visits to the Group. By touring its facilities and studying its production settings and green-transition practices, they grounded the project in an authentic industrial context. The design also weaves the cultural narrative of the Yellow River into its spatial expression. Through digital interaction and immersive experiences, it translates specialized content about the chemical industry into a more accessible and engaging science-education experience, exploring a new approach to communicating the story of green chemical development through art and design.

The award demonstrates BUCT students' capacity for innovative practice by integrating academic learning with real-world industry experience. It also reflects the Department of Art and Design's efforts to build on the University's disciplinary strengths and advance the integration of art and engineering through interdisciplinary practice. The Department will continue to encourage students to engage with technological development, industrial practice, and societal needs; to explore interdisciplinary approaches to talent development that connect art and design with the University's areas of academic strength; and to enable more high-quality design outcomes to contribute to science communication and industrial development.
